Women’s Soccer: Roadrunners advance with 3-1 playoff win over Citrus

Serina Vargas scored two goals while Marissa Morales added a goal and an assist to help lead the No. 7-seeded Rio Hondo College women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over No. 10 Citrus College in a first-round game of the 2018 Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday in Whittier.

Rio Hondo, 12-3-5 overall, will travel to face No. 2 Santiago Canyon College on Tuesday (Nov. 20) in a second-round game. Santiago Canyon improved to 20-0 this season after its 3-0 win over No. 18 Golden West College on Saturday.

In the win over Citrus, the Roadrunners set the tone early, getting a goal in the second minute of play. Rio Hondo went into halftime up 2-1 and added an insurance goal in the second half to secure the victory.

Izella Delgadillo played well in goal and posted 8 saves.

Tuesday's contest at Santiago Canyons marks the second consecutive year the squads will meet in the second-round of the playoffs. Last season, No. 6 SCC edged No. 3 Rio Hondo by a final score of 1-0 in Whittier.

Two more wins are needed to advance to the CCCAA Soccer State Championship on Nov. 30 & Dec. 2 at Ventura College.
