Women's Soccer: Rio Hondo continues unbeaten run with win over LBCC

Rio Hondo College continued South Coast Conference interdivision play on Friday with a decisive 4-1 win over Long Beach City College. The Roadrunners were up 3-0 just 10 minutes into the contest before cruising to the easy victory.

Rio Hondo jumped on the Vikings early and often. Daisy Gallegos opened up the scoring with her goal in the fourth minute off the assist from Erika Lizarraga. Two minutes later, Samantha Garcia added to the Roadrunners' lead with her goal thanks to the assist from Viviana Viramontes. Lizarraga basically put the game out of reach as she scored in the 10th minute with the assist from Madison Mader.

Long Beach (7-5-3, 2-1-1 SCC) finally broke through in the 41st minute when Savannah Christensen scored just before the end of the first half.

The second half was a defensive battle, but Lizarraga converted on a penalty kick attempt in the 62nd minute to close out the scoring for both teams.

Lizarraga was the offensive star of the match, collecting a pair of goals and an assist to lead the Roadrunners. In goal, Jenny Garcia (65 minutes, 4 saves) and Angelica Holguin (25 minutes, 2 saves) combined for the win.

With the win, Rio Hondo extended its unbeaten streak to open the season and improved to 9-0-4 overall. The Roadrunners have won five of their last six games. Rio Hondo returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 25) when it travels to LA Harbor College for a 2 p.m. SCC interdivision game.
