Women's Soccer: Roadrunners explode for 6-0 win over Fullerton

Freshman forward Samantha Garcia earned a hat trick with three goals to help lead the Rio Hondo College women's soccer team to a big 6-0 non-conference win over visiting Fullerton College on Friday in Whittier.

Rio Hondo remains unbeaten this season as the Roadrunners improved to 2-0-2 overall with tonight's rout of the Hornets. Rio Hondo returns to action on Tuesday (Sep. 13) when it travels to Ventura College for a non-conference game.

On Friday, Garcia wasted little time in giving the Roadrunners the lead. In the second minute, she took a pass from Rita Villagra and placed her shot past Fullerton goalkeeper Kennedy Heywood to give Rio Hondo a 1-0 advantage.

With early momentum on their side, the Roadrunners went on to dominate the contest. Erika Lizarraga (7th minute) and Daisy Gallegos (32nd minute) scored before Garcia closed out the half with her second goal of the contest in the 44th minute to send the Roadrunners into halftime with a commanding 4-0 lead.

Vivian Viramontes got in on the scoring with her goal in the 63rd minute before Garcia completed the hat trick and wrapped up the scoring with her final goal in the 84th minute. Villagra and Viramontes both had two assists while Gallegos and Zaira Hernandez also were credited with assists.

In goal, Viramontes and Jenny Garcia combined to post Rio Hondo's third shutout of the season.

The loss dropped Fullerton to 1-2 overall. Under a barrage of shots, Heywood totaled nine saves for the Hornets.
