Women’s Basketball: Rio Hondo named No. 15 seed for playoffs; Avalos selected conference MVP

The postseason run for the Rio Hondo College women's basketball team officially begins this week as the Roadrunners were named the No. 15 seed for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs. Rio Hondo will host No. 18 College of the Canyons in a Round 1 game on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

Ticket prices for the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) postseason game at Rio Hondo are $12 for general admission and $8 for all identified students, faculty, staff, senior citizens age 60 and over, and children under 12 years old.

Rio Hondo is making its fourth consecutive postseason appearance under head coach Rene Herrera. The Roadrunners enter the playoffs with a 15-13 overall record and tied for second place at 4-4 in the final South Coast Conference North Division standings.

Canyons is 17-10 overall heading into Wednesday's contest. The Cougars, under head coach John Wissmath, went 11-3 in the Western State Conference South Division to finish in third place.

Wednesday marks the second meeting of the season between the two squads. On Nov. 21, Rio Hondo defeated Canyons 65-58 at the Glendale College Crossover tournament.

The winner of Wednesday's game will travel to face No. 2 seed Palomar College (28-0) in a second-round contest on Saturday (Feb. 25) in San Marcos. Three wins are needed by the Roadrunners to advance to the CCCAA Basketball State Championships on March 9-12 at West Hills College Lemoore in Lemoore.

2022-23 POSTSEASON AWARDS

Following the close of the regular season, the Roadrunners brought home five All-South Coast Conference North Division honors, inlcuding sophomore Rosalie Avalos being selected as the SCC North Player of the Year. Avalos was also named third-team All-State by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
