Sophomore Maggie Lamas scored a career-high 33 points to help lead Rio Hondo College to a 68-65 win over College of the Desert at the second day of the Irvine Valley College Tournament. Rio Hondo went 1-2 at the tournament after also dropping games to Grossmont College on Thursday and Southwestern College on Saturday.

Lamas had an impressive weekend as she averaged 22.3 points over the tournament to raise her season scoring average to a team-best 17.5 points per game.

Grossmont 64, Rio Hondo 51
Lamas and Emily Mercedes both scored 13 points each to lead Rio Hondo in the opening-round loss on Thursday.

After taking a 19-17 lead after the opening quarter, Rio Hondo ended up chasing the Griffins the rest of the way. The Roadrunners got as close as 48-45 at the end of the third quarter but Grossmont outscored Rio Hondo 16-6 in the fourth to secure the win.

Mercedes added nine rebounds and five steals while Fatima Sandoval had seven boards.

Rio Hondo 68, Desert 65
Rio Hondo won the battle of the Roadrunners for the second time this season, beating Desert in a consolation-round game. Rio Hondo handled COD 65-33 in their second game of the season but had to hold off Desert for Friday's win.

Rio Hondo took a 59-50 lead into the fourth quarter. But COD rallied, getting as close as 65-64 with a minute to play. But Brianna Morales nailed a jumper with 39 seconds left to extend the Rio Hondo advantage.

Lamas had her monster game with 33 points, including 12 in the third quarter. She nearly had a double-double with nine rebounds while adding five steals.

Mercedes was able to collect a double-double of her own with 10 points and 10 boards. Morales also chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.

Southwestern 75, Rio Hondo 67
The Roadrunners couldn't hold a late lead and suffered the loss on Saturday to close the tourney. Rio Hondo held a narrow 54-53 advantage with 7:59 to play but Southwestern made consecutive three-pointers to go up for good 63-56.

Lamas scored 21 points while Mercedes posted her second double-double of the weekend with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Morales also had a good game with 10 points and seven boards.

Rio Hondo, now 2-8 overall, returns to action on Dec. 14 at 5 p.m. when it opens the West Hills Lemoore College Tournament against Santa Barbara City College.
