Rio Hondo College freshman Maggie Lamas scored 19 points to lead the Roadrunners in a 72-42 loss to Solano College in an opening-round game of the Riverside City College Earn Our Stripes Tournament on Friday. Rio Hondo faced similar results in a 62-43 setback to Grossmont College on Saturday to close the tourney.

Solano 72, Rio Hondo 42
Lamas did her best to keep Rio Hondo in the contest with her game-high 19 points but the Roadrunners fell behind 15-8 after a sloppy first quarter for both teams and couldn't recover.

Lamas provided most of the offense for Rio Hondo as she was the only Roadrunner to score in double figures. Amber Valdez added seven points while Emily Mercedes chipped in with five points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.

Grossmont 62, Rio Hondo 43
Mercedes had a good all-around game for the Roadrunners, posting a team-best 15 points while adding five rebounds and three steals but Rio Hondo went cold during the final two quarters in a 62-43 loss to Grossmont.

The Roadrunners trailed by just four points, 31-27 at halftime, but were outscored 31-16 over the second half.

Mercedes was nearly perfect, shooting 7 of 8 from the field for the game. But she shot 3 for 3 in the second half while the rest of the team failed to make a basket.

Lamas added eight points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds while Brianna Morales chipped in with seven points and Valdez totaled six points and four assists.

The Roadrunners are now 1-4 overall and return to action on Friday (Nov. 17) when they travel to Santa Ana College for a 5 p.m. non-conference game.
