Women's Basketball: Second half dooms Rio Hondo in loss to Chaffey

Freshman Sammy Flores and sophomore Aliyah Montiel both scored 13 points each, but a dismal third quarter by Rio Hondo College hurt the Roadrunners as they dropped their South Coast Conference North Division opener by a final score of 55-47 to visiting Chaffey College on Wednesday night.

The loss was Rio Hondo's eighth straight and dropped the Roadrunners' record to 4-14 overall and 0-1 in SCC North play.

With the score tied 26-26 at halftime, both teams went cold as Rio Hondo was outscored 9-5 in the third quarter. The squads' offense went back to normal in the fourth, but Chaffey edged the Roadrunners 20-16 to hang on for the win.

Rio Hondo shot 24 percent from the field, making just 17 of 70 shots in the contest. Flores and Montiel both made five field goals on their way to 13 points. Sophomore Marisa DeLeon came up just short for a double-double as she finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds. Freshman Destinee Garr grabbed a game-high 11 boards to go with seven points, four assists, and three steals.

Melanie Henderson led Chaffey (11-8, 1-0 SCC North) with 15 points.

Rio Hondo will look to snap its losing streak on Friday (Jan. 20) but will have a tough time as the Roadrunners host Southern California's top-ranked team, East Los Angeles College, in a 7 p.m. SCC North Division game.
