Women's Basketball: Second quarter dooms Rio Hondo in loss to OCC

Sophomore Aliyah Montiel scored a team-high 19 points but a six-point, second-quarter by Rio Hondo College doomed the Roadrunners in a 65-57 loss to the Orange Coast College Pirates in a opening-round game of the Irvine Valley College Tournament on Thursday.

Montiel has led Rio Hondo in scoring in all but one game this season. Her 19 points was just one shy of her season-high of 20 scored against Santa Ana College. She made 6 of 19 shots on the night as the Roadrunners couldn't overcome a tough night shooting 29 percent from the field (20 of 70).

With the scored tied at 14 after the first quarter, the Roadrunners went cold as Orange Coast outscored Rio Hondo 15-6 in the second to put the game out of reach.

Freshman Essence Pineda had a good game off the bench, scoring 11 points for the Roadrunners.

Orange Coast (7-3) got a game-high 21 points from Chyann Pendergrass.

The loss dropped Rio Hondo to 3-6 overall this season. The Roadrunners return to tournament play on Friday (Dec. 9) when they will face Grossmont College at 1 p.m. in a consolation-bracket game.
