The Rio Hondo College women's basketball team closed out the 2015 calendar year on a winning note as the Roadrunners defeated Los Angeles Valley College 53-44 to capture the consolation championship at the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament in Ventura. Wednesday's victory capped a 2-1 showing at the tourney and closed out Rio Hondo's non-conference schedule.
Sophomore Danna Robles led the Roadrunners' offense as she tied a season-high with 21 points in the win over LA Valley. Robles shot 6 for 10 from the field and was a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds.
Rio Hondo was down by one after the first quarter, held a narrow 32-30 lead after three quarters before outscoring LA Valley 21-14 in the fourth to close out the win.
Sophomore Ashley Rendon added 11 points and seven rebounds vs. LA Valley. She was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 17 points and six rebounds over three games. Rendon had a huge game against Southwestern, scoring a career-best 27 points.
Rio Hondo begins Foothill Conference play on January 9 at Barstow College. The Roadrunners are 7-10 overall but are playing their best ball of late. After going a dismal 1-7 in November, Rio Hondo went 6-3 in December and won a pair of tournament consolation titles.
The Roadrunners play their first home game of the season on Saturday, January 16 at 1 p.m. against College of the Desert.
