Softball: Roadrunners sweep opening-day doubleheader from San Bernardino Valley

WHITTIER – The 2023 Rio Hondo College softball season got off to an impressive start. On Friday, the Roadrunners won both games of an opening-day doubleheader against visiting San Bernardino Valley College.

Rio Hondo took Game 1 by a final score of 8-2 and needed just five innings to complete an 8-0 mercy-rule victory in Game 2.

The Roadrunners totaled 21 hits over the two contest, including 14 in Friday's opener. Nadine Marquez (2 for 3), Jasmine Brokaw (2 for 3), and Nadia Landeros (2 for 4) all drove in two runs each in Game 1 while Angelina Aldrete had three hits, scored three runs and stole three bases.

Clarissa Evangelista struck out seven batters in the complete-game effort. She allowed two runs and four hits.

Annika Umana made her presence felt in Game 2. She went 2 for 3, smashing a two-run home run on her way to 3 RBI to lead the Roadrunners at the plate. Leiana Rodriguez and Marquez both drove in two runs and Landeros added two more hits.

Lourdes Soria tossed the five-inning, complete-game shutout. She scattered four hits and struck out four.

Rio Hondo, now 2-0, returns to action on Tuesday (Jan. 31) when it hosts Santa Ana College in a 2:30 p.m. non-conference game.
