Softball: Roadrunners leave Compton with 11-3 loss

A close game for Rio Hondo College quickly got out of hand. With the scored tied 3-3, Compton College scored eight runs over the final two innings to send the Roadrunners home with an 11-3, five-inning loss on Tuesday.

The South Coast Conference defeat dropped Rio Hondo to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3 in the SCC.

Rio Hondo got off to a good start, greeting Compton starting pitcher Diamond Hackett by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.

Katherine Arroyo and Samantha David hit back-to-back singles to begin the rally. A ground out advanced both runners to second and third base before Miranda Fernandez and Madeline Peralta smacked consecutive base hits to score runs.

But Compton answered with two runs in the bottom of the first off Peralta to even the score and put up another run in the third to go up 3-2.

In the fourth, Rio Hondo tied up the game once again thanks to a RBI single from Azucena Enriquez that scored Peralta.

Things went downhill from that point. Compton took advantage of a pair of Roadrunner errors to score four runs in the fourth and closed out the mercy-rule win with four more in the fifth.

Peralta and Enriquez both went 2 for 2 with a RBI to lead the Roadrunners at the plate. Peralta took the loss, allowing four earned runs and seven hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Rio Hondo returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 14) when the Roadrunners host Cerritos College in a 3 p.m. SCC game.
