Softball: Four-run rally not enough to hold off Chaffey

Rio Hondo College rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth inning but it wasn't enough to stifle Chaffey College in a 12-4, five-inning loss on Tuesday in Rancho Cucamonga. The South Coast Conference defeat dropped the Roadrunners to 5-28-1 overall and 0-7 in the SCC.

Trailing 10-0, Janae Moreno finally got Rio Hondo on the board with a two-run double in the fifth that scored Desiree Rhodes and Maria Enriquez. Sarah Hauffen-Salgado followed with a single that drove in Moreno and Jessica Salazar that momentarily put the eight-run mercy rule on hold.

But Chaffey put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth for the walk-off win.

The Roadrunners totaled five hits in the contest, led by two from Hauffen-Salgado. Rhodes and Salazar also had singles in addition to Moreno's double.Taylor Alcala took the loss after allowing six runs and nine hits over 2 ⅓ innings.

Rio Hondo will look to snap a two-game losing skid on Thursday (April 12) when it hosts Pasadena City College in a 3 p.m. SCC contest.
