Softball: Disastrous first inning dooms Roadrunners in loss to El Camino

An 11-run, first-inning by visiting El Camino College put the game out of reach early as the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners suffered a 12-4 South Coast Conference loss to the Warriors in five innings on Tuesday in Whittier.

El Camino sent 18 batters to the plate in the opening frame and totaled 10 hits and also took advantage of a pair of Rio Hondo errors in the massive rally.

But the Roadrunners didn't go down quietly. Alize Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Samantha David in the bottom of the first before Rio Hondo scored three times in the third. Lopez collected her second RBI of the game with a single to score Sarah Hauffen-Salgado. Victoria Medina came in on Taylor Alcala's groundout while A Lopez scored on a double steal attempt.

Hauffen-Salgado went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Rio Hondo.

Alcala pitched well in relief for the Roadrunners. She brought an end to the ECC surge in the first and went on to allow one unearned run over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Rio Hondo, now 4-26-1 overall and 0-7 in conference play, returns to action on Thursday (April 5) at 5 p.m. when the Roadrunners travel to East Los Angeles College for a SCC game.
