Softball: Rio Hondo comes up short in loss to No. 8 El Camino

The Rio Hondo College softball team couldn't get much going in its 8-1, six-inning loss at No. 8 state-ranked El Camino College on Thursday. The Roadrunners totaled just three hits in the South Coast Conference interdivision defeat.

Rio Hondo went up early after scoring a run in the top of the second. Desiree Rhodes led off the frame with a walk and moved to third on an ECC error. With one out, Taylor Alcala drove in Rhodes with a sacrifice fly to right to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.

But El Camino (13-5) responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good. The Warriors rallied for five runs in the fifth and brought the game to a close with a run in the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule.

Rhodes, Taylor Rodriguez, and Lopez had the lone hits for Rio Hondo. Alcala took the loss in the circle after allowing four runs and three hits over four innings.

Rio Hondo, now 3-13-1 overall, returns to action on Tuesday (March 6) at 3 p.m. when the Roadrunners travel to East Los Angeles College for both teams' South Coast Conference North Division opener.
