Softball: Roadrunners hammer LA Harbor 14-0 for mercy-rule win

The Rio Hondo College softball team snapped out of its five-game losing streak in a big way on Tuesday. The Roadrunners totaled 13 hits, including five during an eight-run, second-inning, on their way to a 14-0 South Coast Conference interdivision win in Whittier.

Second baseman Tiana Rodriguez and shortstop Serina Castrellon both had big games for Rio Hondo, each driving in three runs. Rodriguez went a perfect 3 for 3 while smacking a double and triple and also scored four runs. Castrellon went 2 for 3, including a double and scored twice.

Centerfielder Alicia Olivas also had a good afternoon, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI while scoring a pair of runs. During the big second inning, Olivas drove in runs with RBI singles in two separate at bats in the same frame.

In the circle, Brenae Martinez allowed just one hit over 3 2/3 innings while striking out four. Desiree Rhodes closed out the victory with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Rio Hondo, now 7-12 overall, returns to SCC North Division play on Tuesday (Mar. 14) to host Mt. San Antonio College at 3 p.m.
