Looking ahead to the 2017 season-opener, Rio Hondo College Softball head coach Bianca Urquidi knew her squad would face a difficult task. The Roadrunners, playing at No. 3 state-ranked Cypress College, suffered a 6-0 loss on Wednesday as they begin their first season as a member of the South Coast Conference.

Rio Hondo managed just two hits in the contest while Cypress, a state championship finalist in 2016, totaled nine hits and blew the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Returning All-State pitcher Brenae Martinez opened the contest by throwing three scoreless innings for the Roadrunners before Cypress rallied for a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth.

Freshmen Janae Guevara and Marissa Macias both hit singles for Rio Hondo's lone hits in the game.

Rio Hondo (0-1), will look to earn its first win on Saturday (Feb. 4) when the Roadrunners host Southwestern College in a doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m.
