Men’s Water Polo: Rio Hondo picks up win over Southwestern at Mt. SAC tourney

Rio Hondo College sophomore Travis Wisher scored a team-high four goals to help lead the Roadrunners to a 14-12 win over Southwestern College on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Tournament in Walnut.

The Roadrunners went 1-3 at the two-day event, dropping games to Sierra College (14-6 final) and Palomar College (18-12) on Friday. Rio Hondo closed the tourney with a 16-8 loss to Fullerton College on Saturday.

Wisher totaled nine goals over the four games to give him 24 on the season.

Rio Hondo led 13-8 after three quarters in Saturday's contest against Southwestern and had to withstand a late rally to pull out the win. Royce Jones and Matthew Alvarez both scored three goals while Cameryn Pesante and Robert Castanon-Delgado split even time in goal.

The Roadrunners opener the tournament with the loss Sierra. The Wolverines built a 6-1 lead after one quarter and were never threatened. Pesante and Alvarez scored twice to lead Rio Hondo.

It was more of the same against Palomar later that day. The Comets went ahead 5-1 after one quarter and the Roadrunners couldn't erase the deficit. Alvarez had a big game, scoring five goals in the loss.

Rio Hondo again ran into early troubles in the loss to Fullerton on Saturday. The Hornets led 5-0 after one quarter and trailed by six (10-4) at halftime. Wisher and Jacob Ayala led Rio Hondo with three goals each in the contest.

The Roadrunners' record moved to 2-9 overall after the weekend's action. Rio Hondo is back in the pool on Wednesday (Sep. 25) when it hosts Chaffey College in a South Coast Conference game at 4:30 p.m.
