Men’s Water Polo: Roadrunners open season with 13-12 win over El Camino

Pablo Segura, Jacob Avila, and Matthew Alvarez all scored three goals each to lead the Rio Hondo College men's water polo team to a 13-12 win over the visiting El Camino College Warriors on Wednesday in both teams' season as well as South Coast Conference opener.

Rio Hondo led 8-6 at halftime and had to hold off a late El Camino rally to pull out the victory. Segura's goal with 2:56 left in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner for the Roadrunners.

Hennessey Avila recorded 8 saves in goal for the Roadrunners to earn the win.

Later in the day, Rio Hondo hosted Occidental College and suffered a 26-8 loss to the NCAA Division III program. The Roadrunners put up a good fight and were down 10-6 at halftime before the Tigers pulled away with 12 goals in the third quarter.

Alvarez and Jeremiah Aguinda both scored twice to lead the Roadrunners. Avila posted 4 saves over the first half of action.

Rio Hondo is 1-1 after opening day and returns to action this weekend (Sep. 7-8) when the Roadrunners will compete at the Golden West College Tournament.
