Men's Water Polo: Second quarter dooms Rio Hondo in loss to Mt. SAC

Daniel Lozano scored four goals while Kent Mertins added three to lead Rio Hondo College in a tough 12-8 South Coast Conference loss to visiting Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday.

The loss dropped to Roadrunners to 2-11 overall and 0-3 in SCC play.

Rio Hondo played well in the first quarter and trailed 3-2 after the opening period. But Mt. SAC rallied for three goals in the second to take a commanding 6-2 lead at halftime.

The two squads both battled in the second half as each team had an answer for their opponent's goals. Rio Hondo and Mt. SAC both scored six goals each over the final two periods. Ultimately, the Roadrunners' scoreless second quarter was too much to overcome.

Jacobo Garrido also scored for the Roadrunners. Hennessey Avila was credited with eight saves in goal for Rio Hondo.

The Roadrunners will look to snap its four-game losing streak on Friday (Sept. 29) when they compete at the Cerritos College Mini Tournament. Rio Hondo will face San Diego Mesa at 11:20 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match vs. Palomar.
