Swimming & Dive: Augustine named SCC Diver of the Year, Rio Hondo men/women both finish 6th

Rio Hondo College freshman Aaron Augustine dominated the field at the South Coast Conference Diving Championships at El Camino College, taking first place in the both the 1-meter and 3-meter events on his way to being named the SCC Diver of the Year.

Augustine earned 40 points on his own in helping lead Rio Hondo to a sixth-place overall finish with 265 team points. Augustine's score of 261.5 in the 3-meter as well as his mark of 252.15 in the 1-meter secured both the individual South Coast Conference and Southern California Regional championships.

Thanks to the success of Augustine, the Roadrunners' Charly Collins was named the SCC Diving Coach of the Year.

Augustine's finishes qualified him for the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Swimming & Diving Championship that get under way this weekend (May 2-4) at DeAnza College in Cupertino. Augustine is the state's No. 3 seed in both events.

The Roadrunners also got standout performances at the South Coast Conference Swim Championships at Mt. San Antonio College from freshman Edward Estrada – 7th in the 200 IM (2:13.89) and 7th in the 200 Butterfly (2:17.96), sophomore Matt Viteri – 8th in the 200 IM (2:13.99) and 8th in the 200 Butterfly (2:19.56), and freshman Armen Duran – 11th in the 200 Freestyle (1:53.33).

On the women's side, sophomore Isabelle Sierra totaled 40 points thanks to a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard IM (5:31.59) and sixth-place showings in the 200-yard IM (2:33.91) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:53.98) to help lead Rio Hondo to sixth place with 262 team points.

Freshman Jastine Vasquez also had a good weekend at the conference meet, totaling 30 points. She was fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (3:13.82), seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle (23:44.28), and 13th in the 200-yard breaststroke (3:18.03).

The Roadrunners also got top-10 finishes from freshman Reyna Baca in the 200-yard backstroke (2:52.23), and freshman Kassandra Cabral in the 200-yard butterfly (5:01.15).
