Men’s Soccer: Late goal lifts Rio Hondo to 3-2 win over Santa Monica

WHITTIER – Ulises Depaz scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 89th minute, to help lead Rio Hondo College to a 3-2 non-conference victory over visiting Santa Monica College on Friday night.

The win improved the Roadrunners to 3-5-2 overall.

Depaz scored in the 43rd minute to give Rio Hondo a brief 1-0 lead. Santa Monica got the equalizer moments later, in the 44th minute to send the game tied into halftime.

Ariel Solano put the Roadrunners back out in front after scoring in the 69th minute, but that was countered once again by the Corsairs with a late goal in the 85th by Ryan Maher.

The contest appeared to be on its way to a draw, but Depaz broke free for the game-winner, taking the pass from Elias Tafolla and beating SMC goalkeeper Cesar Gomez for the go-ahead score minutes before the final whistle.

Bryan Cote totaled 3 saves to earn the win in goal for Rio Hondo.

The Roadrunners are back in action on Tuesday (Sep. 26) when they host Los Angeles Mission College in a non-conference game.
