Men’s Soccer: Piza’s goal leads Rio Hondo to season-opening win over East LA

Freshman Ramon Piza's goal in the 51st minute would be all the offense Rio Hondo College would need as the Roadrunners held on for a 1-0 win over visiting East Los Angeles College in their season opener on Tuesday in Whittier.

After a scoreless first half, Piza finally broke free for a goal six minutes into the second that would prove to be the game-winner. Sophomore Sebastian Sandoval was credited with the assist. Rio Hondo put 11 shots on goal but managed to score just once.

Freshman Arturo Bustamante had an impressive debut in goal for the Roadrunners, posting 10 saves for the shutout.

Rio Hondo (1-0) returns to action on Friday (Sep. 3) when the Roadrunners hosts Santa Barbara City College in a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
