Men’s Soccer: Rio Hondo beats Compton, earns draw with LA Harbor

The Rio Hondo College men's soccer team played a pair of close South Coast Conference interdivision contests and came away with a narrow 1-0 win at Compton College while hosting Los Angeles Harbor College to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday.

The Roadrunners are unbeaten in their last four games and currently sit with a 9-2-4 overall record.

In one of the most thrilling matches of the season, the Roadrunners came out on top thanks to Mauricio Sanchez' game-winning goal in the 90th minute, just moments before the game's final whistle.

Both teams' offensive chances were at a minimum as Rio Hondo outshot Compton by a 7-4 margin.

Jose Paredes made three saves in goal to help post Rio Hondo's sixth shutout of the season.

After 70 minutes of scoreless soccer, Rio Hondo finally broke through with a goal by Daniel Virgen, coming off the assist from Moses Gutierrez.

But that lead was short-lived as LA Harbor responded with the equalizer in the 75th minute thanks to Nick Serrano's unassisted goal.

Just like at Compton, scoring opportunities were limited for both teams. Rio Hondo had seven shots on goal while Compton totaled six on goal against Paredes.  He posted five saves in the draw.

The tough stretch of the schedule continues Friday (Oct. 20) when Rio Hondo hosts No. 1 nationally-ranked Cerritos College in a 4 p.m. SCC crossover game.
