Former Rio Hondo coach, player Tyler Ellis to take over Downey HS program

Former Rio Hondo College men's basketball standout and assistant coach Tyler Ellis is moving on as he has been named the head coach of the boy's basketball team at Downey High School.

Ellis spent the past two seasons as a member of Roadrunners' head coach Steve Johnson's coaching staff.

"I am extremely proud of all the hard work and timeless hours he put in here at Rio Hondo with recruiting, player development, practice and game planning, scouting, and many other duties," said Johnson. "He will definitely be missed as a part of our staff but I know he will do an amazing job at Downey High School."

Ellis returns to coach at his alma mater. As a student-athlete at Downey, Ellis was named first-team All-San Gabriel League as well as first-team All-Area by Wave Newspapers.

He played two seasons at Rio Hondo (2010-12) before finishing out his collegiate career at Bethel College in Kansas.
