Rio Hondo College men's basketball stand out Jonathan Martinez has signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Chapman University. Martinez was joined by his coaches, family, and athletic department staff at a signing ceremony on campus.

Martinez was named All-South Coast Conference North Division honorable mention this past season for the Roadrunners. The sophomore point guard out of Sonora High School averaged a team-high 17.5 points per game to rank third in the SCC North Division while his 3.7 assists per game was second in the division.

Martinez scored a season-high 31 points while playing all 40 minutes in an 85-70 loss at Santa Monica College on Dec. 7. He also had nine games of 20+ points scoring during the season.

"Jonathan is the type of player coaches want in their program," said Rio Hondo head coach Steve Johnson. "He has a high basketball IQ, he knows how to compete on the court and in the classroom, and he understands his value to a team. "I was truly blessed to have someone like him to play for me for two years. Chapman definitely got a great young man, student and basketball player."

Chapman University, located in Orange, competes at the NCAA Division III level and is a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Under long-time head coach Mike Bokosky, the Panthers compiled a 10-15 overall record during the 2018-19 season.
