Men's Basketball: Roadrunners winning streak snapped with losses at AVC

The Rio Hondo College men's basketball team had its four-game winning streak come to end after consecutive losses at the 65th Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College. The Roadrunners dropped non-conference games to host Antelope Valley and MiraCosta College to fall to 6-4 overall.

Over two games at the tournament, freshman Derek Ohara led the Roadrunners by averaging 12.5 points per game.

Antelope Valley 87, Rio Hondo 61
Antelope Valley jumped out to a 10-0 lead to open the game and Rio Hondo was never able to recover. The Roadrunners were down 43-32 at halftime and were outscored 44-29 in the second. Ohara led Rio Hondo with 14 points while freshman Trevon Welch added 11 points. The Roadrunners nailed 12 three-pointers, including Ohara going a perfect 4 for 4 from long distance. AVC (4-4) outrebounded Rio Hondo by a 45-28 margin and was able to score 23 second-chance points.

MiraCosta 82, Rio Hondo 69
Once again, Rio Hondo fell behind early and faced a 12-2 deficit to open the contest as MiraCosta (4-6) went on to take a 43-30 lead at halftime. Freshman DeShaun Carr bounced back from a rough game on Friday to lead the Roadrunners with 14 points. Ohara added 11 points while freshman Justin Ayala came off the bench to score 12 points. Rio Hondo took care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers but was still outrebounded 33-23.

Up next: Rio Hondo will look to stop its slide on Thursday (Nov. 8) at 2 p.m. when the Roadrunners open play at the three-day Cypress College Tournament against Southwestern College.
