Men's Basketball: Rio Hondo completes 3-0 weekend at El Camino tourney

Rio Hondo College picked up two more wins to cap a perfect weekend at the El Camino College Tournament of Champions. Following their win over MiraCosta on Thursday, the Roadrunners closed out the tourney with victories against Moorpark on Friday and Santa Ana on Saturday.

Rio Hondo 59, Moorpark 58
Freshman DeShaun Carr nailed the game-winning shot with 7 seconds left to lead the Roadrunners to a thrilling win over Moorpark. Rio Hondo led 50-45 with 5:54 to play before Moorpark responded with a 7-0 run to jump ahead 52-50. Trailing 58-54 with 1:24 left, Rio Hondo scored the final five points of the contest.

Carr had 8 points and 8 rebounds while sophomore Angelo Sandoval posted a double-double with a team-leading 15 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Josiah Sotomayor came off the bench to score 8 points and added 3 rebounds, including the big offensive board before Carr's game-winner.

Rio Hondo 82, Santa Ana 62
The Roadrunners improved to 6-2 overall with the win over Santa Ana to wrap up their weekend on Saturday. Rio Hondo was up 48-27 at halftime and was never threatened. 9-0 and 10-0 runs in the first half extended out the Roadrunners' lead as Rio Hondo led by as many as 33 points.

Sotomayor had another big game off the bench as he totaled a game-high 17 points. Sandoval scored 14 points to go with 7 rebounds while Carr had the double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Trevon Welch nearly had a double-double of his own, but came up short with 9 points and 11 rebounds.

Rio Hondo returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 22) when it hosts Cypress College in a 5 p.m. non-conference game.
