Men's Basketball: Roadrunners fall in home opener 81-70 to MiraCosta

Rio Hondo College freshmen Trevon Welch and Josiah Sotomayor both scored 15 points each but it wasn't enough as the Roadrunners suffered an 81-70 loss to MiraCosta College in their 2016-17 home opener on Thursday in Whittier. The loss evened Rio Hondo's record at 2-2 overall.

The Roadrunners fell behind 42-30 at halftime and went on to outscore MiraCosta 40-39 in the second half. But the 12-point deficit was too much to overcome.

Rio Hondo shot 25 of 68 from the field for the contest, including eight from three-point range. Welch nearly had a double-double, as he grabbed seven rebounds to go with his team-high 15 points. Sotomayor came off the bench to score his 15, nine of those point coming off a trio of three-pointers.

Freshman DeShaun Carr added 10 points to go with four rebounds and two assists while sophomore Angelo Sandoval led the Roadrunners with eight rebounds while scoring nine points.

Rio Hondo returns to action next Thursday (Nov. 17) at 3 p.m. when the Roadrunners will face MiraCosta once again, this time in an opening-round game of the El Camino College Tournament in Torrance.
