Men's Basketball: Roadrunners drop season-opener 76-71 to Cerritos

Freshman guard DeShaun Carr scored a team-high 19 points in his Rio Hondo College debut, but the Roadrunners couldn't hold a halftime lead and lost 76-71 to Cerritos College on Thursday in their season-opener at the Fifth Annual Don Gehler Memorial Tournament hosted by San Diego Miramar College.

Rio Hondo held a narrow 37-34 advantage at halftime before the Falcons outscored the Roadrunners 42-34 in the second to pull out the victory.

The Roadrunners shots 44 percent (22 of 50) from the field, including 11 three-pointers. Freshman forward Trevon Welch was also impressive in his first game as a Roadrunner, as he totaled 14 points off four three-pointers while grabbing five rebounds.

Freshman Jr. Hernandez had 11 points off the bench while freshman Derek Ohara chipped in with 10 points. Carr added four rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block in his opening contest.

The Roadrunners will look to pick up their first win tomorrow (Nov. 4) when they take on Santa Ana College at 12 p.m. in the consolation bracket of the tournament.
