Baseball: Early slide continues with 6-2 loss to San Diego Mesa

After opening the season winning its first three games, the Rio Hondo College baseball team has hit a bump in the road. On Thursday, the Roadrunners lost their third straight game, falling 6-2 to visiting San Diego Mesa College.

Rio Hondo totaled seven hits but left nine runners on base and couldn't get much going offensively against five San Diego Mesa pitchers.

Trailing 5-1 in the fifth inning, the Roadrunners got an RBI double from Matt Hickman that scored Ricky Akles and got their final run in the sixth thanks to a run-scoring ground out by Charles Sousamian that brought in Garrett Shumaker.

Akles and Jacob Lang both went 2 for 5 to lead Rio Hondo at the plate.

Nick Juarez took the loss for the Roadrunners after allowing five runs and five hits over three innings. Steven Alvarez (2 inn.), Evan Foor (2 inn.), and Nick Acedo (1 inn.) all pitched well in relief with scoreless outings.

Rio Hondo, now 3-3 overall, will look to snap its three-game losing streak on Friday (Feb. 7) when the Roadrunners travel to College of the Canyons for a 10 a.m. non-conference game.
