Baseball: Rio Hondo hangs on for 10-6 win over Antelope Valley in season opener

The 2020 baseball season got off to a good start for Rio Hondo College as the Roadrunners cruised to a 10-6 win over visiting Antelope Valley College on Friday in both teams' opener.

Rio Hondo totaled 12 hits in the contest but had to overcome five errors. The Roadrunners led 10-2 in the top of the ninth inning but held on for the victory after Antelope Valley scored four runs.

Trailing 1-0, the Roadrunners rallied for five runs in the third and added three more in the fifth. Two runs in the eighth closed out the Rio Hondo scoring.

Jacob Lang and Charles Sousamian both went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead Rio Hondo at the plate. Garrett Shumaker also drove in a pair while Ricky Akles (2 for 2), Matt Hickman (2 for 4), Justyn Duran (1 for 3), and Diego Flores all had RBI for the Roadrunners.

Starting pitcher Nick Juarez had a good opening outing as he allowed one unearned run and four hits over four innings. Steven Alvarez picked up the win after allowing a run and four hits over three innings.

The two squads return to action on Saturday (Jan. 25) at noon when the series shifts to Lancaster.
