Baseball: Six-run, fifth-inning lifts Rio Hondo to win over LA Valley

The Rio Hondo College offense finally returned to life and banged out a season-high 15 hits in an 11-6 non-conference win over visiting Los Angeles Valley College on Wednesday.

The victory snapped the Roadrunners' four-game losing streak and evened their overall record at 4-4.

Diego Perez (2 for 3, 2 R) and Jordan Salgado (1 for 4, 1 R) both drove in three runs each to lead the Roadrunners at the plate.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Perez lined a two-run double to score Christian Tinnin and Jesus Maldonado to even the score. Two batters later, Marc Salcido singled to drive in Perez and give the Roadrunners' the lead for good.

Salgado launched a sacrifice fly that scored Jimmy Portillo to add to the Rio Hondo lead in the third before the Roadrunners put together their big rally in the fifth.

Rio Hondo sent 12 batters to the plate, totaling six hits and three walks in the epic inning. Salgado's two-run double and a two-run single by Ricky Akles proved to be the big blows.

Abraham Carrillo pitched well in the start for Rio Hondo to earn the win. He went five innings and allowed two unearned runs and three hits. Carrillo struck out six but walked five. Isaiah Vasquez tossed the final three innings for the save.

The Roadrunners will look to keep the momentum going when they host San Diego Mesa College on Thursday (Feb. 21) at 2 p.m.
