Baseball: Roadrunners can't stop Compton offensive attack

Seven different Rio Hondo College pitchers combined to allow 21 hits in an offensive clinic put on by El Camino College Compton Center on Thursday as the Roadrunners fell to the Tartars by a final score of 9-6 in Whittier.

The South Coast Conference loss dropped Rio Hondo to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play. The two squads will wrap up their two-game conference series on Saturday (12 p.m.) at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton.

Rio Hondo held a narrow 6-5 advantage after five innings before Compton took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Christian Valdez drove in two runs for Rio Hondo, including his RBI single that scored Marcos Rivas to give the Roadrunners their one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth.

The Roadrunners totaled 10 hits in the contest and definitely had their chances in the game, but left 11 runners on base. Nick Ybarra (2 for 4, 1 run), R.J. Romo (2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI), and Cesar Sandoval (2 for 4, 1 RBI) all had two hits each for Rio Hondo.
