Baseball: Roadrunners rally late for win over MSJC

Rio Hondo College sophomore R.J. Romo lined a bases-clearing single as part of a five-run seventh-inning to help lead the Roadrunners to an 8-1 non-conference win over visiting Mt. San Jacinto College on Friday in Whittier.

Mt. San Jacinto (0-5) took an early by scoring a run in the top of the second off Rio Hondo starter Robert Lucia. But the Roadrunners came right back in the third to tie up the contest thanks to a two-out error that allowed Nick Delarosa to score.

The game would remained tied up until the bottom of the seventh when Rio Hondo would send nine batters to the plate in the go-ahead rally. Steve Genera led off with a single, Victor Hernandez walked, and Nick Ybarra singled to load up the bases. Pinch hitter Cesar Sandoval walked to force in a run before Romo's single drove in three runs. Two batters later, Tony Rosario brought home Romo with a ground out to second.

Rio Hondo added two more runs in the eighth thanks a RBI single by Sandoval and a two-run double by Randy Buenrostro.

Chris Velasquez (1-0) earned the win in relief as he tossed two scoreless innings. The trio of Jake Wilson (3 1/3 innings), Velasquez, and Andrew Quillen (1 inning) closed out the contest allowing no runs and three hits.

Rio Hondo, now 5-2 overall, returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 14) when the Roadrunners host Victor Valley College in a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
