Beach Volleyball: Tough day for Roadrunners, drop three matches at Long Beach

It was another rough day for the Rio Hondo College beach volleyball team. On Friday, the Roadrunners lost three matches, falling 5-0 to host Long Beach City College, 4-1 to Westcliff University of Irvine, and 4-1 to Cypress College.

Rio Hondo opened a very windy day at the Granada Beach Courts with a South Coast Conference loss to Long Beach. The Roadrunners couldn't avoid the shutout but nearly came away with a win at No. 2. The Rio Hondo duo of Mara Sanchez and Stephanie Perez pushed the Viking team of Kylie Irwin-Paz and Jessica Blakeman to three sets, but ultimately fell by scores of 21-16, 15-21, 15-7.

Picking up the lone win against Westcliff was the No. 4 team of Ariel Garcia and Valerie Rodriguez (21-15, 21-17) while the No. 3 duo of Evelyn Alferez and Janine Coria won 24-14, 24-10 against Cypress.

After opening the season with five straight wins, the Roadrunners have now lost six consecutive matches to fall to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in the SCC. The Roadrunners will look to snap their losing streak when they return to action next Friday (Mar. 15) at El Camino College. Rio Hondo will face the host Warriors in a conference match at 10 a.m. before taking on Pasadena City College.
